Power NI Dr McKenna Cup Rd 2: Derry 1-11 Fermanagh 2-04
A very young Derry side overcame a stubborn Fermanagh defence and conditions that would have had an Arctic Fox dreaming of a Mediterranean break to make it two wins from two in the Section B of the McKenna Cup.
Oak Leaf boss Brian Mciver made eight changes from the side that had defeated Monaghan in Clones last weekend with Aidan McAlynn captain for the day in place of the rested Mark Lynch.
The unfamiliarity of the line-up showed as Derry looked a little disjointed in the early stages of the match before finding more cohesion as the game progressed and eventually scoring six unanswered points to overcome a two goal first half salvo from the Quigley brothers.
First half goals from Sean and Seamus Quigley saw Fermanagh lead by 2-3 to 1-4 at halftime but playing against the wind in the second half the Erne men could only manage a single point a period that saw Kielt kick four points which proved the margin of victory for the home team.
The early exchanges were very open with both teams finding the net in the first few minutes. With three minutes on the clock Derry's brightest forward Aaron Kerrigan fired home from eight yards after breaking Patsy Bradley's ball down to himself.
Derry didn't have much time to enjoy that score as Fermanagh responded with a goal of their own from the next passage of play as Seamus Quigley gave Eoin McNicholl no chance with a rocket of finish to the roof of the net to add to his brother Sean's minute point.
Sean Quigley scored again on nine minutes and Fermanagh led by two. Kerrigan pointed from play after a driving run by Declan Mullan and then added a free to after Mullan had been pulled back to level matters at 1-2 apiece.
Derry should have added a second goal but Kielt and Kerrigan both saw close range efforts blocked when they really should have found the net.
Fermanagh showed no such profligacy when their chance came and struck for their second goal when Sean Quigley fired home after the Derry defence failed to deal with a high ball that bounced in the square and rebounded off the upright.
Emmett McGuckin and Kevin Johnston responded for Derry with points from play but Seamus Quigley's 35th minute free saw Fermanagh lead by two at the break at 2-3 to 1-4.
With the wind at their back Derry improved in the second half and Fermanagh's attacking threat was largely nullified. Declan Mullan got the first point of the half for Derry before Ruairi Corrigan kicked what would prove Fermanagh's only second half score as Derry dominated the second half. Ruairi Corrigan pointed on 39 minutes to cancel out Declan Mullan's opening score but that would be the last time the visitors would raise a flag.
After a quiet first half Kielt eventually found his kicking boots and kicked the first of his four scores on 43 minutes. Substitute Ciaran McGoldrick fisted a point to level matters at 1-7 to 2-4 and three more scores from Kielt and another fisted effort from McGoldrick saw emerge deserved four point winners.
