Alan Grant’s second half goal proved pivotal as Derry hurlers registered their first win of 2014

Derry hurlers welcomed back 2013 captain Ruairi Convery as they overcame a tough challenge from DCU in the opening round of the Kehoe Cup.

Five second half frees from the big Swatragh man combined with a goal from Alan Grant proved to be decisive on a day Derry were made to fight all the way, with some ring rustiness apparent – although understandable for the first game of the year.

Derry took control of the game in the first half opening the scoring through an Aaron Kelly goal.

A second goal followed after DCU goalkeeper Padraic Burke lost control of the ball and Ruairi Convery pounced just before the half-time whistle to give Derry a 2-6 to 0-8 lead at the interval.

The students rallied in the second half with Curran and Cillian Egan both hitting the net to put DCU into a one-point lead.

The lead was short lived however as Convery registered free after free before Grant’s goal gave the Oak Leafers some breathing room.

DCU continued the fight with points from Bulger and Treacy. However, Derry held out for a first win of 2014 in a game from which manager Ger Rogan can take many positives.

Derry now face Trinity College Dublin in the last eight next Sunday in Dublin.
