St Pat’s Maghera lifted the coveted trophy for the 14th time but they had to pull out all the stops to beat a battling Omagh CBS side in the Ulster Colleges SFC final at the Athletic Grounds.

Omagh CBS made a real game of it, with a 12th-minute goal from Conan McElduff helping them to lead by two points at half-time. But the holders came out with all guns blazing and hit the opening five points of the second half.

In the 44th, they scored a controversial goal when Danny Tallon finished at the second attempt, with Omagh complaining furiously about a double-bounce in the build-up.

St Pat’s could well have found the net inside the opening minute but Tallon pulled his shot wide. Conor Cassidy and Conor Convery helped Maghera into the lead before McElduff fired in a superb goal for Omagh.

Gavin Slane and Peter Hagan exchanged points before Tallon brought the sides level. Points from ‘keeper Packie O’Neill and Aidan McSorley helped Omagh to lead 1-5 to 0-6 at the short whistle.

Maghera flew out of the blocks after half-time, hitting five in a row from Paul McAtamney, Paul Gunning, Convery (2) and Caolan McNeill to take control.

James Darcy opened Omagh’s second half account but then came that vital Tallon goal.

Ronan McHugh and Gunning traded points, then Darcy closed the gap, but Maghera held out to take the silverware once again.
