A stunning display from Mark Lynch drove Derry to a deserved victory over Dublin at Celtic Park this afternoon.

The Banagher man notched up 1-8 against the All-Ireland Champions in a victory that secures Derry's Division One status for next season.

After Dublin had opened the scoring through Paddy Andrews Derry quickly settled Declan Mullan got Derry off the mark, Lynch opened his account from a free and Ciaran McFaul made it 0-3 to 0-1 after nine minutes.

The excellent Alan Brogan pulled one back for the Dubs and Paul Hudson's free had the sides level again soon after. The nip and tuck nature of the exchanges continued as Lynch and Cailean O'Boyle scores for Derry were cancelled out by Michael Dara Macauley and Andrews.

Fergal Doherty and Brogan then exchanged points and Brogan was denied a goal by super block from Thomas Mallon in the 29th minute. With Doherty and Brogan again pointing the sides were level at 0-8 with half an hour played.

The key moment of the game on 31 minutes when Sean Leo McGoldrick and Kevin Johnston combined to play in Lynch who drove a low finish past Stephen Cluxton for the game's only goal.

Lynch then extended the lead from a free. Brogan pulled a score back from a Dublin free before Derry were denied what looked a clear penalty when O'Boyle was hauled down in the square. With Ciaran McFaul adding an injury time point Derry led by 1-10 to 0-9 at the break.

Points from Lynch (free) and Heron saw the Derry lead increase to six and they had a let off when Darren Daly hit the base of the post but a sustained period of Dublin pressure saw McMahon and Brogan (twice) reduce the gap to a goal.

Lynch kicked a super score in the 57th minute before both teams were reduced to 14 men, Derry's Mark Craig picking up and black card to add to an earlier yellow for a challenge on Andrews while Dublin's McMahon received a straight red after striking Lynch off the ball.

At this stage Dublin went looking for a goal but were denied on two occasions by the alert Mallon. But it was Derry who managed a late flurry of scores on the counter-attack with Lynch hitting his seventh and eight points of the game and Heron adding his second to seal the win.
