The GAA.ie Player of the Week awards are back for 2014.

The Allianz Hurling League starts this weekend, but we’ve already had two rounds of football action – and the results are in for this week’s Football Player of the Week award.

The stand-out performers of the weekend were undoubtedly Derry, who produced a gusty performance to stun Kerry on their home patch of Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney last Sunday. Therefore, it’s unsurprising to see an Oak Leaf County man finish top of the pile this week.

Midfielder Fergal Doherty returned to the Derry set-up this season after being away for a couple of years, and what a difference the Bellaghy man has made since coming back. He was outstanding against the Kingdom, and is a deserving winner of our first award of 2014.

In second place was Tyrone attacker Darren McCurry, who hit a brilliant tally of 2-4 in his side’s convincing win over Mayo in Division I. Of his tally, 2-3 came from play – rendering his exploits even more impressive. He finished ahead of Cork’s John O’Rourke, who came third after hitting 0-3 against Kildare in Páirc Uí Rinn.

GAA.IE FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK

1. Fergal Doherty (Derry) – 549 votes (49%)
2. Darren McCurry (Tyrone) – 439 votes (39%)
3. John O’Rourke (Cork) – 139 votes (12%)

Doherty was a fairly comfortable winner in the end, with his massive support on Twitter getting him over the line. McCurry actually garnered more votes on Facebook than Doherty and O’Rourke combined, but Doherty did likewise on Twitter, which was enough to give him the prize with 49 per cent of the total vote.

Players of the Week are decided based on votes cast by followers of @officialgaa on Twitter and on the Official GAA Facebook Page.
