Following on from the news that Derry GAA had been given a major boost with the announcement of significant funding by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development towards a 4G facility at Owenbeg Derry GAA Centre, Minister Michelle O'Neill marked the official start of works on the facility on Monday.
The county secured approximately £765,595 in grant aid from the department via the ARC Northwest Programme – setup to assist Rural Communities in the Council areas of Derry City Council, Limavady Borough Council, Omagh District Council and Strabane District Council.
Once completed, Owenbeg Derry GAA Centre will boast a fourth generation artificial multi-use recreational surface of approximately 14,000 square metres, in addition to the wonderful facilities already in place within the complex.
Cutting the first sod of the new 4G facility Minister O'Neill said: Derry GAA is widely recognised for the development of sport and is committed to providing recreation, leisure and physical activity to young and old alike, irrespective of gender or community background.
"Last year Derry GAA received funding of £765,595 from ARC North West under the Rural Development Programme towards the development of a 4G multi-use facility. I welcome the opportunity to officially commence the construction work of what I'm sure will be a welcome addition to the existing facilities.
"The completed project will provide a year round facility for men and women of all ages and abilities, promoting active participation in physical activity. I have no doubt this new facility will improve the health and well-being of the people of this rural community."
Derry GAA Chairperson John Keenan commented:

“With the initial support of the National Infrastructure Committee of the GAA, we are delighted to have been able to tap into this source of funding from DARD. The net result will be that we can deliver an important strategic piece of infrastructure for the community at no cost to clubs or county."
