Collins captures Ventre for City

Danny Ventre has become Roddy Collins’ third signing for Derry City, with the experienced midfielder opting to joining the Brandywell club.  The twenty seven year old Englishman has spent the last six seasons in the League of Ireland, and captained Sligo Rovers to the League of Ireland title in 2012.

Ventre started his career at Chester City, before joining Accrington Stanley.  The Liverpudlian played with Accrington in the Conference and was part of the side which captured the title in 2005/6.  Seeking first team football he left Accrington and joined Sligo in July 2006.  The versatile midfielder was an integral part of both Paul Cook and Ian Baraclough’s successful sides of recent years.  Indeed the player won every major domestic trophy during his time with the Bit O’Red.

2013 was a challenging season for Ventre who lost his place in the side following injury and struggled to get back into the Sligo side on a regular basis, though he did play a vital role in the dramatic Ford FAI Cup Final in November 2013.  Ventre managed to end up on the bonnet of a car during the celebrations of the dramatic late goals in the Aviva Stadium.

Roddy Collins had attempted to lure Ventre to Athlone as he took the Midlanders to the First Division title, but the player wasn’t tempted by First Division football.

However with Roddy now in charge at the Brandywell and Ventre available following the expiration of his contract at the Showgrounds, the popular player has opted to remain in the Northwest, transferring from the Bit O’Red to the Candystripes.   Ventre appeared over 200 times for Sligo Rovers and with the versatility of the player saw him play at full back, centre half and in the midfield.
