The biggest day of the hurling club calendar in Derry takes place on Sunday 25th August at Owenbeg Derry GAA Centre. To mark the occasion, ‘Oakleafers’ brings you a comprehensive 40-page guide to the days proceedings including views from both clubs, opinion, analysis and historical context stretching back to 1887.
Just some of the highlights in ‘Oakleafers’ this Sunday:
- We look back at a conversation with one of the most influential figures in Derry hurling – dual player and former All-Star Peter Stevenson.
- Is hurling too fast for even Hawkeye? Fearghal Mag Uiginn discusses as gaeilge.
- Conor Murray talks to Chris McCann about Derry’s Ulster hurling triumph of 2000.
- Still coming down from last weekend’s football overdose, Cahair O’Kane previews the big game and gets the views from both camps.
- The Gaelic Life’s talented wordsmith Ronan Scott talks Derry hurling, Monthy Python and the fine art of saying nothing.
- Slaughtneil’s Catherine McEldowney gives a rundown on recent hurling final recalls for the Emmets.
- Hurling development squad coach and two time All-Ireland camogie winning manager, Joe Passmore, gives his view on the concept of the much talked about ‘Team Ulster’. Ulster says ‘Yes’ OR ‘No’?
- We lift the lid on some of the development well underway around McGlinchey Park with an exclusive interview with club chair, Francis McCloskey.
- Bernie Mullan on why there will be no dog fighting or whiskey at Owenbeg on Sunday, only fast hurling. We hope.
