Champions dethroned to set up Owenbeg double header

McGurk Architects SHC Quarter final: Slaughtneil 1-15 Swatragh 1-11.

Having suffered injuries to key personnel, a late surge by 2012 Derry senior hurling champions Swatragh just fell short in their bid to overturn Slaughtneil at Owenbeg last Friday night.

Having led 0-09 to 0-06 at half time, the Emmet’s dug in second half against a stiff breeze. With a high ball from Oisin O’Doherty came the decisive moment the first and ultimately result defining goal.

All supporters of Derry hurling will have been gladdened by the introduction of Ruairi Convery late on. The Derry captain got the final score of the game shortly after Michael Kirk blasted a 21m free to the net.

Both events, however, were consolation as Slaughtneil held on to set up a semi final meeting with title favourites Kevin Lynch’s.

McGurk Architects SHC Quarter final: Lavey 1-14 Banagher 1-10.

If proof were needed that league is league and championship is championship then this physical encounter reaffirmed that.

Easily accounting for Lavey on their own patch only a few weeks ago, last year’s finalists Banagher contributed to a close encounter in which Lavey eventually turned the tables.

Much like Friday’s game it was a high dropping attempt from Lavey’s Ben Dodds which proved decision. Having led for the opening quarter Banagher relinquished their lead in the second quarter after a series of points by the Erin’s Own men. It was a lead they not retain.

Two goals in as many minutes, firstly Banagher, and immediately afterwards, Lavey as O’Boyle’s leap distracted the St Mary’s defence sufficiently to ensure the sliotar’s passage to the net.

With a half time lead 1-07 to 1-04, Lavey’s Caolan McGurk dominated the middle sector in the second half as Banagher dropped deep into defence. It was a platform which ensured Lavey’s progression to Saturday’s semi final against Ballinascreen.
