City sign off with six of the best

Derry City 6 Limerick 0

City finished their 2013 campaign with a crushing defeat of Stuart Taylor’s Limerick side, with five goals coming in the second half.  The biggest home victory of the season ensured that City’s unbeaten run continued and secured fourth place in the league table.  Declan Devine saw his charges finish the season with a morale boosting home win, with all eyes turning to the Aviva next week.

City struck early, with Patterson thundering a shot against a post after three minutes before Michael Rafter headed home from 6 yards after six minutes.  The Limerick defence failed to deal with an innocuous delivery for Madden.  Kelly headed th ball back across his goal and Rafter guided the ball home to break the deadlock.  Dealt with an early setback, the visitors settled well with Hughes and Bradley dominating the middle of the park.  However City were still the more threatening and McDaid had two chances to extend the advantage before the break.

A poor defensive header sent McDaid clear but a last ditch challenge from Whitehead prevented the danger.  Then, just before the break, a good save from Cusack from close range ensured that the advantage remained just a single goal at the break.  However the goals flowed in the second half as City turned on the style.  A great run from McEleney saw Cusack save from a narrow angle, but McDaid slotted home from close range.  A terrific ball into the box was nodded home by Jarvis for his first goal for the club.

It was clear that Limerick had given up the ghost at this point as City attacked at will.  Patterson delivered a delightful ball for McDaid who volleyed home and then the two combined again, this time McDaid slamming home from 16 yards after a low centre.  The largest cheer of the night came after a terrific move saw Madden scamper clear and the full back chipped the keeper to make it six.

Limerick’s night was summed up when one of the substitutes, O’Hanlon put the ball over from four yards in front of an empty goal.  City continued to crusie forward at will and Cusack tipped over brilliantly from Patterson.  It was a superb display to finish the session and ensure that City finish in fourth spot.
