World Record Attempt

Be part of history… set a new fitness world record

ON Friday, August 9th, Limavady will hope to put its name in the history books with a fitness related world record attempt… but the northwest town needs your help.

As part of the Limavady 400 celebrations, a bold attempt is being made to have the most people in one venue perform push ups for a period of one minute. The event will take place at 5pm, outside the Roe Valley Arts & Cultural Centre in the middle of town.

The current world record is 352, achieved by Laboratorios Silanes S.A. de C.V. (Mexico) at Bosque de Tlalpan Park in Mexico City, Mexico, on 20 October 2012.

An attempt will be made to draw at least 400 people to the Limavady event.
"We wanted to target a record that tied in with our 400
th birthday celebrations, so this works well," said Council's Limavady 400 events coordinator Andy Chapman.

“All sports club members are asked to wear their club jerseys and make this record their own.

"We will be setting up a live video link with a gym in New Zealand, who will lend us some support with between 50 and 100 people taking part in the same challenge. It won't be included in the official numbers, but will add a quirky twist… with the same challenge taking place at the same time, 12,000 miles away."

The record is for the greatest number of people performing push ups simultaneously at a single venue. The basic principle that applies to all Guinness World Records push up challenges will be used.

The body must remain straight throughout, i.e. no bending at the knees or waist.
The body must be lowered until at least a 90-degree angle is attained at the elbow.
The body is then raised until the arms are straight although they do not need to be locked at the elbow.

"The push ups can be as slow and steady as you like, so don't worry about repping out fast," said Andy.

"Most people of even average fitness levels will be able to take part and you have two weeks… so get practicing."
