Power NI Dr McKenna Cup Rd 3: Derry 1-17 St Mary's 0-14
Claudy's Aaron Kerrigan and Loup’s Anthony O’Neill provided the cutting edge up front as Derry made it three wins from three to finish top of McKenna Cup Group B and book a semi-final clash with Tyrone at Healy Park on Sunday.
Three first half points from the Mitchel's man and an Anthony O’Neill goal helped Derry recover from a sluggish opening quarter after which they had trailed by 0-6 to 0-2. Tomas Canavan (0-4, three frees) and points from Brian Hasson and Peter Carragher had got the early scores for the Ranch with Kerrigan raising the two white flags for Derry.
James Kearney started the Derry fight back with a 19th minute free after a foul on the busy Niall McFeely before O’Neill’s goal – coming after great work from Ciaran McGoldrick who stripped possession from a St Mary's defender. McFeely also added a point and although substitute Ryan Johnston did signal St Mary's continued resistance, Derry led by 1-7 to 0-7 at the half-time.
In fairness to St Mary's, they continued to try and take the game to Derry after the interval but Brian McIver made a signal of intent bringing on a raft of established players in the second half. With Enda Lynn (0-3) and Ciaran McFaul (0-2) adding verve to the attack and Mark Lynch (0-1), Fergal Doherty bringing greater physicality to proceedings Derry always looked in control.
