Rodgers goal pivotal as Emmet’s progress

McGurk Architects SHC semi-final: Slaughtneil 1-16 Kevin Lynch’s 1-11

A Brendan Rogers goal in the opening stages of the second half proved pivotal in a tight encounter in the second senior hurling semi final at Owenbeg.

That strike, following an excellent Ciaran O’Kane save from Se McGuigan in the Kevin Lynch’s goal, was the signal that Slaughtneil were in determined mood to over turn the 2011 champions from Kevin Lynch’s.

Having led 0-09 to 0-07 at half time, Rodgers strike opened the flood gates and visibly rocked Kevin Lynch’s.

With the first half tight it all aspects of play it was McKaigue and O’Kane who keep the scoreboard ticking for the winners. The third quarter however belonged to Rodgers as Slaughtneil sensed victory.

That Lynch’s were favourites in the eyes of many meant little to Slaughtneil. Through Chrissy McKaigue they dominated and bossed the middle sector, whilst in Cormac McKenna they had the driving force which took the game to the Lynch’s.

McKaigue contributed three points from play, which when added to Gareth O’Kane’s six pointed frees, proved vital for Slaughtneil.

Ciaran Herron, Niall Ferris and Mark Craig fought hard against the maroon tide. However, a goal from the impressive Kevin Hinphey proved mere consolation as Slaughtneil qualified for their first county final since 2004.

Last year we had a novel pairing of Banagher and Swatragh contesting the Fr Collins Cup. In 2013 it’s the turn of Ballinascreen and Slaughtneil. Like the championship to date, it’s wide open.
